Subwoofer car: cruise that makes others’ ears fall off

If you love thumping basses, they shouldn’t be missing from your car either. With bass speakers, so called subwoofers in the car, no problem. However, it already starts with the selection. Because the price of the installation also depends on the type and design of the vehicle.

These are the types of subwoofers:

  • Active subwoofers: only the speakers have to be mounted.
  • Passive subwoofer: besides the speakers, the amplifiers have to be mounted as well.

Note: If you have your subwoofers installed by a hi-fi specialist, you may save money because the installation is included in the price. However, for warranty reasons, most companies will only install speakers that you have purchased from them.

In addition, you should consider the following questions, which also determine the cost:

  • Does the subwoofer have its own housing?
  • If it is installed concealed?

The cost of installing subwoofers

Installing a subwoofer in a car is of course not a cost-free undertaking. the price depends, as usual, on the complexity and the time required for the installation.

The simple variant

The easiest to install are active subwoofers with their own enclosure. It usually takes an hour to an hour and a half for an auto mechanic to do it. They are mounted and connected in the trunk of your car. This is even the cheapest option, on average the installation costs 100 euros. on the internet it is more expensive, often you pay between 200 and 250 euro.

The luxury version

but you get luxury only if you invest more: in subwoofers without their own housing, which are installed concealed in your car. A double bottom will be installed in the trunk, because somewhere there has to be space for the connection cables. You can also put a power amp in there.

But you will have to pay a lot for it, 200 euro for the basic price, 200 euro for the power amplifier and 200 euro for the installation costs. If you can do the math, you’ll end up with at least 600 euro- and the subwoofer itself also needs to be paid for.

The DIY variant: install your subwoofer yourself

If you’d rather save your money for the next ibiza vacation, you should do the installation of the subwoofers in the car yourself. All you need is: a set of cables for the bass speakers and various wrenches. Then you’re off:

  1. Bolt the subwoofer securely to the side wall of the trunk.
  2. Lay the cables from the radio to the subwoofers by removing the plastic trim on the inside of the passenger side. Just pull hard. Plug the cinch and remote cables into the designated jacks on the radio and subwoofer.
  3. Now you still need electricity. Run the cable along the driver’s side under the panels.
  4. You will find an opening to the engine compartment under the steering wheel. If it’s not, you’ll have to drill one.
  5. 20 centimeters before the battery contacts you have to install a fuse in the cable.

Remember: before you connect subwoofer and battery, connect the plus cable (often B+) to the subwoofer itself. Close then the minus side to the so-called ground point to. If you can’t find it, look in the documents of your car.
