Marten bites – how to recognize them and what to do about them

Martens are not only active in spring and late summer – even when they are at their best, because this is the mating season for the furry deer. As a result, marten bites and the associated marten damage to cars occur particularly in the summer months. Find out how you can protect yourself from marten bites in this article.

How do the bites come about??

Martens are animals with a fixed territory. Especially during the mating season, they are very active and sometimes also move around in the territories of other martens. The males mark their territory with urine to signal through the scents contained therein that they should better keep away from other males. If you park in a marten’s territory – at your home, for example – there is a good chance that it will also mark its territory on and in your car. If you drive your car into the territory of another marten, this marten will perceive the scent of its competitor. Since the animals are nocturnal, the danger is greater if they also park the car in the evening hours in the competitive area – there is enough z. B. Also the visit at friends or in a restaurant. Especially commuters are at risk for marten bites.

The marten in whose territory you are now parked becomes aggressive and wants to destroy the scent traces of its competitor – the result: bitten-through ignition cables, bitten-through coolant hoses, gnawed insulation mats.

How to recognize a marten bite

Martens have a rather small bite with pointed teeth. If you open the hood of your car, you can recognize marten bites:

  • If the marten has had a good romp, then cables may already be completely bitten through and insulation mats may have holes in them
  • Most cables have a smooth surface. If you see small holes or teeth marks, then the marten has already had these in his sights
  • If you suspect that a marten bite is in a coolant hose, then squeeze the hose so that the suspected bite is in the resulting crease. This is how you can see if a hole has already formed.
  • If you run the engine of your car, then you can see if you have a marten bite in a hose, because then coolant comes out in drops or a very fine jet.

How you can protect yourself from marten damage

Caution is always better than indulgence – this also applies to marten damage and marten bites. You can upgrade your car in such a way that martens do not dare to come near it or do not get into the engine compartment. This saves you the search for possible bites and the trouble that damage causes. Avoid the damage with a marten protection for the car. The problems at the damages are namely:

  1. Not all insurance policies cover marten damage
  2. consequential damages are usually not covered, which z. B. engine damage can be expensive
  3. you have to pay a deductible
  4. Settlement also takes time
