Correct ph value in the pool

The word ph comes from the latin term potentia hydrogenii and represents the acidic or alkaline action of water. For the operation of a pool, it is a decisive key figure. The scale ranges from 0 to 14. A value of about 7 is neutral, if it is lower, the water is acidic. A higher determination means alkalinity.

Every liquid – whether organic or inorganic – has a ph value. For example, blood is relatively neutral at 7.4, beer is around 5 and is acidic, and sodium hydroxide is alkaline at 14. For human skin, which itself has a ph value of 5.5, the same measurement is skin neutral.

Correct PH value in the pool

Measuring and evaluating the ph-value in the pool

As a basic prerequisite for water disinfection, the ph-value in the pool must first be measured. This can happen in two ways:

  1. With test strips or tablets
  2. With a meter

The indicator of the test strips changes color depending on the water quality. Neutral means a rich yellow, while anything in the red and orange ranges is acidic. Blue and green discolorations indicate an alkaline pH value in the pool. The measurement should be carried out at least once a week, because the water quality can change quickly due to external environmental influences and regular use. Warm weather and hot temperatures also affect the pH value in the pool. If there are deviations, you must take countermeasures in order to obtain neutral water again.

pH value in the pool too high

There can be many reasons why the ph reading in the pool is suddenly much too high. If algae occurs or disinfectants and other supporting chemicals have been misapplied, the pH in the pool will increase and promote further algae growth and harmful water quality. You can also recognize this by the following characteristics:

  • Skin and eye irritation
  • Milky cloudy water
  • Lime formation
  • Rough pool walls
  • Unpleasant odor
  • Flocculant no longer works

In two steps, you can now determine the water quality and, if necessary, lower the ph value again.

  1. Determine the ph-value in the pool: for this purpose, hold the test device or the test strips in the water according to the manufacturer’s instructions and wait for the display.
  2. Calculating the minus average: depending on the value, the decrease must be done in steps of 0.1. If the value is 7.8, subtract the perfect average of 7.2 and add the ph-minus solution to the water six times at 0.1 each time. Wait until it is completely dissolved before continuing. Test the pool water again.

If necessary, add fresh water and backwash the filter pump. Do not forget to disinfect again with chlorine or active oxygen.
