How to delete erasable memory on the mac conclusion

for some mac users there is not enough space on the computer. no matter how big your hard drive is, somehow you always end up with flash drives, external hard drives, or miles of cloud storage.

Besides the annoyance of having your files all over the place, it can also be frustrating when you want to add new apps to your mac but don’t have any storage space. What can you do about it?

What is erasable space (and how much do I have)?

The erasable space is a special mac feature for memory optimization. it represents files that your mac can remove if more space is needed, but can also be downloaded again at any time. This is a feature on macos sierra and above and also only available if you have memory optimization enabled.

How to check your memory. first go to the apple logo on the top left of your screen. Then click about this mac. you first see the details of your computer’s hardware. Select storage from the tab bar.

You will see a breakdown of the files on your mac. the area with the gray diagonal lines should say purgeable if you hover your mouse over them and tell them how much space these files take up.

If you don’t see this section, it may be because you don’t have "optimize memory" enabled. Click on the manage.. to the right of the memory bar. you will see the following popup.

At optimize storage, press the optimize. When finished, a check mark will be displayed.

Purgeable memory vs. Clutter

deletable space is not the same as unordered files on your computer. clearable space is a mac feature that allows your mac to automatically create additional space when needed without permanently deleting files.

On the other hand, regular clutter is things like duplicate photos, files left over from uninstalled programs, and things you don’t use often that could be offloaded to the cloud or an external hard drive.

How to delete deletable space on mac

because of the way the purgeable function works, your mac will only remove these items when you have no other space left. This happens automatically. You can’t affect these files manually, unless you want to delete itunes movies from your library or get rid of old e-mails (these are the file types your mac manages for you automatically anyway).

However, if you want to eliminate clutter and create space, you can use cleanmymac X. This tool automatically finds leftover old apps and other useless items for you and then deletes them.

First download cleanmymac and install the app on your mac. when you open it, click on the scan button at the bottom of the window.

you will then see exactly how many files can be removed. Be sure to click review and uncheck everything you think you want to keep, then press run to remove the files and save space!

Cleanmymac X is free if you have a setapp subscription, or about 35 US dollars for a personal license. Alternatively, you can try an app from our list of the best mac cleaners. You may also want to read our full review of cleanmymac here.

if you don’t want to use a third party cleaning app, you can also delete files manually. a good starting point is your photos, documents and download folders. Files accumulate here over time and they tend to forget them. Need to get rid of a big piece of storage space? Consider uninstalling some old apps you no longer use or switch to cloud storage.

Since the deletable space listed in the info window of your mac is a built-in function for managing additional files, you cannot change its size manually.

your mac will do that for you – if you install something that needs more space than available, the deletable items will be removed, but will still be available for download later on.

However, if you desperately need more storage space, you can use cleanmymac or a similar app to remove cluttered files from your computer. Overall there are many options to keep your mac’s drive available – hopefully one works well for you!
