Coffee maker guide: descaling senseo and tassimo

using a senseo coffee maker requires no hard work and gets you a good cup of coffee effortlessly. However, as with any other kitchen appliance that comes into contact with water, you should descale the senseo.

But briefly back to the preparation: you simply place a coffee pod in your senseo pad machine and select your cup size. You can brew a single cup or use both holders to brew two pods at the same time.

Once you have inserted the senseo pad and pressed the button, the senseo machine will start working. It pumps the right amount of water for your selected cup size to deliver a perfectly measured and balanced cup of coffee. The taste of the coffee is similar to that of filter coffee.

There are different senseo models, each with its own functions, which we will briefly describe in our article.

The coffee in a senseo pad machine can only be prepared with coffee pods specially adapted for senseo. When buying, make sure the pads are compatible with senseo.

Extra tip

if you want to drink a cup of strong coffee, use 2 pods in the 2-pad holder and then press the 1-cup button.

You want to know how to descale your regular coffee maker??

How to descale your senseo?

Your descaler indicator or the senseo signal lamp lights up with the word CALC after approx. 400 coffee runs on. Now you should descale your senseo.

We’ll show you how to do that here:

Prepare to descale the senseo:

  1. Fill a pot with 1 liter of water.
  2. Pour half of the descaler into the pot.
  3. Pour the descaling mixture into the water tank of your senseo coffee maker until it reaches the maximum level.
  4. Put the water tank back on your senseo coffee maker.

Start the first descaling cycle:

  1. Press the power button to turn on your senseo coffee maker.
  2. Insert the 1-cup pod holder with a used coffee pod into the coffee maker. close the lid and make sure it is locked properly.
  3. Place an empty jug under the coffee spout to collect the descaling mixture.
  4. Press the 2-cup button. Repeat this process until the water tank is empty.

If you have a senseo machine with a smaller water tank of for example. 1 liter, pour the rest of the descaling mixture into the water tank until all of the descaling mixture is used up.

The first descaling cycle is now finished, continue with the second descaling cycle.

Note

Never interrupt the descaling process.

Start the second descaling cycle:

  1. Fill the jug again with 1 liter of water.
  2. Pour the other half of the descaling agent into the pot.
  3. Pour the descaling mixture into the water tank.
  4. Put the water tank back on your senseo coffee maker.
  5. Replace the 1-cup pad holder with the 2-cup pad holder and another used coffee pad. Close and lock the lid.
  6. Place the empty pot back under the coffee spout.
  7. Press the 2-cup button and let it run. Repeat this process until the water tank is empty.

If you have a smaller water tank, keep refilling the descaling solution until the bottle or the jug is empty.

All descaling cycles are now finished. Start rinsing the machine to remove the descaling solution.

Start the rinse cycle:

  1. Replace the 2-cup pad holder with an empty 1-cup pad holder. Close the lid until it locks into place.
  2. Rinse the water tank under the tap.
  3. Fill the water tank with fresh water up to the maximum level indicator.
  4. Place an empty jug under the coffee spout.
  5. Press the 2-cup button to start the rinse cycle. Repeat this procedure until the water tank is empty.

Finish the rinse:

  1. Rinse the water tank under the tap.
  2. Fill the water tank with fresh water up to the maximum indicator.
  3. Place an empty jug under the coffee spout.
  4. Press the 2-cup button to start rinsing. Repeat this procedure until the water tank is empty.

You have now descaled your senseo and the next cup of coffee is already waiting for you with a delicious smell.

Which senseo machines are actually available?

  • Senseo original (XL): basic model
  • Senseo viva cafe (duo select)
  • Senseo quadrante

As the name suggests, this is the original senseo model. You can make one or two cups of coffee at the touch of a button. This model is also available in an XL version. The water tank is larger. This way you can make not four, but seven cups of coffee in a row without refilling the water tank. In addition, some original models have the intensity select function. This function makes you a stronger cup of coffee.

Visually the viva cafe is very similar to the original. However, there are a number of differences.

  • Larger water tank, so you can make five cups in a row instead of four
  • Features a descaling light that indicates when your machine needs to be descaled
  • Also available in a duo select version. This version can change the brewing technique for a fuller coffee taste

The intensity select function is available on both senseo and allows you to adjust the coffee strength for a stronger cup of coffee.

The quadrante has a square design, so you can easily place it in a corner or against a wall in your kitchen. In terms of functions, this model is very similar to the original XL. The water tank has the same size. Otherwise, unfortunately, the senseo coffee maker does not allow you to adjust the coffee strength or the brewing technique. An additional drip tray prevents the coffee from splashing up.

with the switch you don’t just brew one or two cups of coffee with a coffee pod – you can also brew a whole pot of filter coffee at once. the senseo switch models have a descaling light so you can clean the machine in time. The coffee strength can also be adjusted thanks to the intensity select function. The water tank has a volume of 1.2 liters. It is large enough to prepare seven cups of coffee without refilling.

The senseo latte duo coffee maker makes a cappuccino or latte macchiato with fresh milk effortlessly. This senseo machine has a milk hose that froths fresh milk from the external milk container. Besides the milk specialties, of course, you can also make a regular cup of senseo coffee. The coffee strength is again adjustable with the intensity select function. Thanks to the descaling light, you are always informed when it is time to descale your senseo. The water tank has a capacity of 1 liter, so you can make about six cups of coffee in a row.
