Tesla model S is the most conspicuous e-car defect report – by far
A special evaluation of the current TuV report compares the defects of the four most popular e-cars of the past few years. Result: the tesla model S turns out to be a giant in terms of defects, with a rate that is a good three times as high as that of the smart fortwo electric drive, which is a dwarf in terms of defects.
Companies on the subject
Significant differences in the extent of defects found: the TuV association compared the defects of the best-selling e-cars BMW i3, renault zoe, smart fortwo electric drive and tesla model S.
The smart fortwo electric drive is the model with the lowest defect rate in a comparison of different e-cars sold in large numbers. This is the result of a special evaluation of the TuV report 2022. The BMW i3 and the Renault Zoe come in second and third, respectively.
"for the first time, a sufficient number of electric cars have been presented to the tuV test centers to enable a preliminary assessment to be made of the technical safety of the vehicles," explains tuV association managing director dr. Joachim buhler the reason for the special evaluation. In the analysis, the monitors compared the four most popular e-cars of recent years: BMW i3, renault zoe, smart fortwo electric drive and tesla model S. On balance, the inspectors described the performance of the vehicles as "mixed".
I3 and zoe follow e-smart
The defect rate for the comparison winner, the smart fortwo electric drive, was 3.5 percent. With defects in the low beam and brake discs and a rate of 4.7 percent, the BMW i3 came in second. 5.7 percent and defects in headlights and chassis are the renault zoe.
The TuV association’s verdict on the loser: "The Tesla Model S is the worst performer in the quartet. With a defect rate of 10.7 percent, every tenth tesla model S fails its first main inspection."
After model S, only dacia duster and logan
Projected onto the 128 cars with internal combustion engines listed in the TuV report 2022, the smart fortwo electric drive would land in the first third, the BMW i3 in the second third and renault zoe and tesla model S in the last third. The TuV association declares: "only the dacia duster and the dacia logan would rank behind the tesla."
The additional scope of testing of e-cars within the general inspection currently includes, among other things, the high-voltage battery (visual inspection) and its attachment, the condition of cables, insulation, connections and plugs, the insertion and removal of the charging cable plug, and the immobilizer function when the charging cable is connected. However, the charging cable itself is not tested.
Charging cable excluded
buhler, managing director of the german tuV association, justifies this with the lack of an obligation to carry charging cables in the car: "an obligation to carry charging cables would first have to be enshrined in law before they could be tested during the main inspection."

Around 9.6 million main car inspections were evaluated for the TuV report 2022. the study period was july 2020 to june 2021.
The defect rates of the four e-cars mentioned were based on 1.142 HU of the BMW i3, 1.939 HU of the renault zoe, 1.645 HU of the smart fortwo electric drive and 812 HU of the tesla model S. However, the vehicles are not included in the TuV report because they have only been sold in significant numbers for a few years now.
